Problem
A personal project that reflects my relationship with my Chinese identity What can I create to represent my growth and connect deeply with my memories of being Chinese?
Solution
Applying the two elements of text and 3D forms into a poster to represent my Chinese identity and culture. I decided to use Chinese characters and the traditional Chinese Mahjong game, a Chinese game I grew up playing with my grandma. This game connects to my childhood, a happy reminder and honour of my grandma since she was the one who taught me how to play this game.

Solution
Applying the two elements of text and 3D forms into a poster to represent my Chinese identity and culture. I decided to use Chinese characters and the traditional Chinese Mahjong game, a Chinese game I grew up playing with my grandma. This game connects to my childhood, a happy reminder and honour of my grandma since she was the one who taught me how to play this game.
I built blocks of Mahjong with their designated Chinese symbols and characters using Adobe Illustrator and Cinema 4D. The Chinese text in the background is bold and large to represent my confidence to say I am Chinese. Designing the traditional Chinese Mahjong game, I chose different Mahjong playing blocks to create visual diversity and interest.
Conclusion
I incorporated the classic Chinese Mahjong game to emphasize the concept of culture and identity. The forms are translucent and vibrant to express the vitality that reflects my feelings of fulfillment for ending my ethnic crisis.
What I Learned
I learned to express a personal message and vision through the use of typography and 3D renderings. This personal project pushed my boundaries with experimenting with 3D design; it was my first time using Cinema 4D to create 3D models. I learned how to develop materials and lightning that best fit the renderings I wanted to achieve.
